Deliberate Detour draws from the vast expertise present in the worldschooling community for its staffing, and strives to place people native to each country into positions of leadership as it grows. Meet our crack start-up team below!


Stephanie Tolk


Stephanie, a serial worldschooler, has been abroad three times with her family for anywhere from five to 11 months. Inspired to create the type of worldschooling hub her family sought, she founded Deliberate Detour in 2023. Not only has she spent nearly five years of her life abroad as an exchange student, Peace Corps Volunteer, backpacker, and worldschooler, but Stephanie has a professional background as a nonprofit founder and executive director.

Jessica Figliolini

Program Associate

Jessica’s love for immersive travel began in her mid-20s with four years in Japan, Spain, and the UK, and later, she completed a master’s degree in Cross-Cultural Human Resource Management. A mother of two girls, Jessica and her family have joined worldschooling hubs in French Polynesia, Egypt, and Peru. In Peru, Jessica served as Program Designer in support of traveling families with a program much like Deliberate Detour.

Misa Bacon


Misa Bacon, CEO of Perfectly Kept Books, helps women leaders become empowered to make better business decisions. From Dallas, Texas, Misa brings classic southern hospitality into her work, providing a calm, anxiety-free experience. She’s also a single mom to an amazingly creative daughter, and it’s important to Misa that she grows up in a world surrounded by empowered women.


Jennifer Brewer

Hub Developer

Jen has been living in Antigua, Guatemala for over 6 years. She and her husband and daughter traveled to many Latin American countries before settling in Antigua. Her career in Human Resources spanned 20 years in various industries, throughout several states in the U.S. A devoted mom, Jen enjoys the perfect climate, beautiful culture, and gracious people of Guatemala,  every day.

Melisa Abadie

Hub Developer

Melisa is from Argentina, but she has lived in Cusco, Peru for almost 8 years. Through her career in hotel management, she has interacted with many different cultures in various locations. Melisa is currently the general manager of Mundo Antiguo Spanish School in Cusco where she supports travelers with language learning and additional experiences in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Melisa brings extensive contacts and connections to her role at Deliberate Detour along with her understanding of what it’s like to be a foreigner in a new place. Even though she has visited more than 25 countries, her favorite country is Argentina.

Camila Mejia

Hub Manager

Camila Mejia, who hails from the city of Arequipa, Peru, eagerly looks forward to being part of this year’s Deliberate Detour as the Hub Manager in Cusco. In her previous role as Logistics Coordinator with Working Without Borders, Camila gained extensive experience supporting traveling families and enjoyed sharing the vibrant culture of her country. Passionate about local food production and social justice, Camila founded a project in support of local farmers and producers. When she’s not working on multiple projects around Cusco, Camila is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Spain.

Mariana Delgado Quintana

Hub Associate

A native of Cusco, Mariana attended university in Argentina, where she worked with children in an orphanage-type setting. Now back home, Mariana works at an Amazonian art center, supporting producers from the Peruvian rainforest. She also spends time as her clown character, Oscuridad, enjoying games, play, and exploring vulnerability. Mariana says, “working with children is the best thing that can happen to someone due to the gratifying experiences it brings.” She’s got big ideas for how to infuse games, play, and fun while learning alongside our hub participants!



Linda Kenyon

Hub Developer & Manager

Linda completed her graduate studies in Sociology and Linguistics in Australia over 7 years ago and began traveling in Latin America soon after. For more than 6 years, she has lived in Oaxaca, Mexico, which holds a special place in her heart. A certified instructor of English as a second language, Linda has worked as a teacher and curriculum developer for children and adults of all ages within schools, non-profits, and private institutions within Mexico and internationally.

Lizbet Rosario Baños

Hub Associate

Lizbet is a certified preschool teacher originally from Oaxaca. She spent more than 10 years in San Francisco, California living and working with diverse communities. When she returned to Oaxaca in 2020, Lizbet became an English teacher, and with Maple Academy, has worked with children of all ages and adults. She loves animals, especially cats, dancing, and making art. To Deliberate Detour, Lizbet brings vast experience working with children along with her deep knowledge of both Mexican and American cultures.
