FAMILY FIELD TRIPS

May be purchased separately. Any child under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Family Field Trips are not included in a child’s program fee.

Day in the Sacred Valley

$130 per person

Our group travels into the Sacred Valley to visit two significant Inca-era sites on this Field Trip. We begin at the salt mines of Maras, first developed by a pre-Inca culture and still in use today, where a natural saline spring is carefully channeled into hundreds of evaporation pools. Participants learn how local families have owned, maintained, and worked these pools for generations, linking ancient engineering to modern livelihoods. We then continue to Moray, where circular stone terraces reveal how the Incas experimented with microclimates to advance agricultural knowledge.

Afterward, we journey to Lake Piuray, set beneath towering Andean peaks. There we enjoy a traditional Peruvian lunch and time to rest and play—participants may relax by the shore, swim, or rent paddle boards. The day ties together engineering, agriculture, and landscape, offering a clear picture of how the Incas shaped—and were shaped by—the Sacred Valley.

Includes: Transportation, private English-speaking tours, lunch. Rental of paddle boards or other water toys not included. 8.5 hour experience.

Quechua Village Immersion

$175 per person

Nestled in Peru’s Sacred Valley, Huilloc Alto is home to a welcoming community descended from the Incas. The women are master weavers who start learning their craft at age six, and most men work as porters, guides, or cooks on the Inca Trail. Our participants learn about weaving techniques and experience a traditional pachamanca lunch. Through this pre-Columbian cooking technique, food is slow-cooked in the ground with hot rocks. Our group interacts with village children through games and kite-flying and may visit the local school.

Huilloc Alto is a special, off-the-beaten path destination, and we’re proud to offer the opportunity to build meaningful connections and deepen understanding of local life.

Includes: Transportation, private English-speaking guide, weaving workshop, lunch. 7.5 hour experience. Those going to Machu Picchu depart from Huilloc for their overnight in Aguas Calientes.

MACHU PICCHU WEEKEND EXCURSION

$685 adult| $660 child | $264 children 0 to 2

A trip to Cusco is incomplete without a visit to magnificent Machu Picchu, the Inca hilltop town that withstood the Spanish invasion and was known only to local people until 100 years ago. Only when you stand in the center of this village, flanked by cloud-enshrouded mountains at 8,000 feet above sea level, do you understand how a community of this size could stay hidden.

This 2 day experience begins the final Friday of each program when you travel by private van through the Sacred Valley to the town of Ollantaytambo. We continue by train to Aguas Calientes, the car-free town, at the base of Machu Picchu. There we settle into our hotel before dinner on our own in one of the many nearby restaurants.

On Saturday morning, we begin our epic day at Machu Picchu! We switchback up to the hilltop in a shuttle bus and begin our exploration of the archeological site. Accompanied by a certified, English-speaking guide, we deepen our understanding of what life was like for the Incas as we tour their schools, temples, homes, granaries, and magnificent views of the Andes.

After our tour, families may choose to walk 40 to 60 minutes downhill to Aguas Calientes or pay a moderate fee (about $12 USD) to return by shuttle bus. We enjoy a leisurely night in town with other worldschoolers prior to returning to Cusco together on Sunday.

INCLUDED

  • All transportation
  • Two nights accommodation
  • Two breakfasts | two lunches
  • All entrance fees
  • Private tours with licensed English-speaking guides
  • Meeting in Cusco to provide information and help you prepare

EXCLUDED

  • Shuttle from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes (you can walk for 40-60 minutes or purchase a $12 ticket)

PARENT-ONLY ACTIVITIES

$215 for both

Available as a package that may not be split up. All Parent-Only Activities take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:30am and 3:30 pm while children are supervised by the program team.

Peruvian Cooking Class

Peru has surged onto the international culinary stage, with restaurants like Maido and Central ranked among the best in the world. On this experience, we explore the roots of that acclaim. We begin at Mercado San Pedro, where a local guide introduces us to Peruvian cuisine through tastings and conversations with vendors, highlighting ingredients that define regional cooking. From there, we head to a nearby kitchen to cook together. We start with a classic Pisco Sour, then prepare four courses: a traditional starter, fresh ceviche, a seasonal main dish, and a dessert featuring fruit from the Amazonian region.

The experience concludes with a shared meal at the table, grounding learning in taste, technique, and context. This class may include other travelers not affiliated with Deliberate Detour.

Includes: English-speaking tour, all ingredients and lunch. 5 hour experience.

Inca History Immersion

The Incas designed their historic capital, Cusco, in the shape of a jaguar—an animal they held sacred—and on this Field Trip we explore both its heart and the jaws. We begin at Qoricancha, the Temple of the Sun, once the most important spiritual and political site in an empire that stretched from modern-day Colombia to the southern tip of Chile. Although a Spanish church was later built atop the temple, original Inca stonework remains visible, offering a powerful lens into the period of conquest and cultural transformation.
After a lively, guided visit and time for lunch and conversation, we depart by private van to Sacsayhuamán, representing the jaguar’s mouth. There we explore the massive stone walls and jagged “teeth” of the fortress that once helped defend Cusco. The day brings Inca history to life through stone, scale, and landscape, helping participants understand how Cusco was built, defended, and transformed.
Includes: Transportation, private English-speaking tour, lunch, drinking water, entry ticket. 5 hour experience.
