ABOUT OUR HUBS

Deliberate Detour Worldschooling Hubs welcome traveling families to deeply impactful month-long experiences in some of the world’s most beautiful, culturally-rich cities. Intimate groups of 16 children, ages 7 to 16, build connections while exploring the art, history, food, and natural environments of a place together. Whether at the dedicated hub space, out in the community, or on weekly field trips, participants learn together through hands-on cooking or crafting workshops, neighborhood walks, visits to awe-inspiring sites, interactions with educators and experts, and so much more.

More than merely an opportunity for socialization and play– though those are vital components too– we prioritize the spectacularly rich, gorgeous cultures in which our hubs exist. For example, one day, children in our Oaxaca hub may learn about Mayan cacao customs while crafting chocolate from seeds, and the next, they may climb the ruins of the Zapotec Empire’s capital city.

We launch in 2024 with hubs in Oaxaca, Mexico, Cusco, Peru, and Antigua, Guatemala! Scroll down or click to learn more.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Growing up an hour from New York City, Stephanie Tolk became fascinated at a young age by different foods, dress, customs, and languages and has been entranced by the world’s cultures ever since. She took her first solo trip at age 15 and has visited nearly 50 countries. Stephanie has spent nearly seven years of her life abroad, including living in an African village in Mali for two years.

In her 20s, Stephanie co-founded an organization in Portland, Oregon called The Pangaea Project, through which low-income teenagers developed leadership skills locally and internationally. Stephanie has extensive experience not only in planning international programs but also in leading a complex organization.

Inspired by the personal growth and expansive worldview she built through travel, she and her husband worldschooled their daughters for two years on five continents. Through Deliberate Detour, Stephanie joyously supports other families in finding life-changing world travel, and to provide the highest-quality hubs possible, she assembled a crack team of experienced, passionate local people, travelers, and worldschoolers.
